Selecting Partners

I don't claim to fully understand the math of decision making, but I do know that values play a role in every decision.  The equation I think of is:

Data Values = Conclusion, wherein is some complex weighting of risk, benefits, pros and cons.

Based on this equation, we can see that two people or organizations with different values will never reach the same conclusion, even if they are exposed to the exact same data. Stated another way, if you and I disagree but have the same values, we just need the courage to step out of our echo chambers and share data.  Once we are looking at the same data, we are going to come to agreement on a decision.  The lessons this equation implies:  (1) work and live with people that share your values, and (2) take the time to listen to other people's data and to share your own.  Don't ask for someone's opinion, ask for the basis of their opinion.

Over the past three decades I've tried to apply this logic in selecting my friends AND my customers.  That's right, I try to find customers that share the values of innovation, mutual respect, and healthcare excellence.  No surprise...we learn from each other and tend to reach agreement on all issues.
